Torchia Scholarship winner Heather Bisset

Heather Bisset is Senior Manager, Corporate Affairs, for one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies and one of Canada’s top 100 employers – Pfizer Canada. For over a decade, her curiosity, resilience, creativity, and courage have earned her a role she is passionate about and allowed her to take her rightful place among Public Relations professionals in her field and space.

Heather has always had an interest and continues to learn about public affairs, world events, corporate social responsibility and public health. In her current role, she is focused on driving Pfizer’s reputation in Canada through external communication activities in support of patients and therapies that make a significant impact on their lives.

Heather credits a great measure of her success with keeping an active network and surrounding herself with people who encouraged her ambition along the way. She underscores the importance of ‘being curious, not stagnant’ and reminds strategists to build that fearless metaphorical muscle, by finding non-traditional ways to network and hone skillsets. These strategies include volunteering with local organizations and taking on daunting projects that propel you beyond your comfort zone.

Prior to honing her craft in the pharmaceutical industry, Heather pursued an undergraduate degree in Journalism at Concordia University. Later, she enrolled in a Post-Graduate Diploma (D.E.S.S.) in Marketing-Communications at HEC Montréal. She also completed post-graduate studies in Social Media Strategy at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

In 2010 and 2011, Heather received the IABC Ovation – Award of Merit for excellence in communications. As history would have it, Heather was the recipient of the inaugural Torchia scholarship in 2007. Being selected for the award gave her a boost in confidence at a time when her career was in its infancy.

The Torchia scholarship, valued at $1500 per year, is awarded to a student who has chosen to study Public Relations/Communications in one of Canada’s two official languages that is not his/her first language or mother tongue.

For Heather, Public Relations is an eclectic mix of art and science. This balance equips professionals to grow, adapt and effect change. While these best practices can be acquired through experience, the foundation is laid through caring coaching and mentorship. As such, she receives much inspiration from the prolific author, media mogul and founder of Huffington Post, Arianna Huffington. Huffington’s mastery of mass communications, journalism and business inspires Heather. She is especially enthralled by Huffington’s narrative – dispelling fear and the boundaries we place in our own path to success.

Heather Bisset has not only found a place to stand in the world of PR, but she is leaving an indelible mark wherever she goes.
