An insatiable thirst for culture, language and communication

Zulfar Azimi is a culture and linguistic enthusiast who has gone to great lengths to expand her knowledge and understanding in these important areas and their interplay with communications. Just a few months ago, Azimi returned from her travels to more than 20 countries, with Indonesia being one of her favourite stops. Immersed in the environment, her curiosity has inspired her to add Indonesian to her list of spoken languages. She also speaks French, English, Hindi and Farsi.

In 2012, Azimi won the Torchia Scholarship Award after submitting a two-page essay on her upbringing as a quadrilingual Afghan-Canadian pursuing an education in public relations at Algonquin College. Since then, she has nurtured a rich career in communications and travelled the globe.

“Understanding different cultures helps me target specific markets,” says Azimi. “It allows me and the client to optimize our actions and messages within varying cultural contexts. Providing a broad and holistic perspective in the area of communications is a great asset to my work.”

As a freelance public relations and digital marketing specialist, Azimi employs her extensive knowledge of content creation, social media and strategic planning to invite audiences, media and stakeholders to engage with companies and small businesses. An integral facet of her consultation offerings is her ability to simplify and comprehend analytics. This allows her to recommend strategies and create an open dialogue between clients and their stakeholder groups.

From 2012 to 2018, Azimi applied her philosophy and method of communication to her work at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and, prior to that, at Global Affairs Canada and now as volunteer head of public relations for Foster a Child to Excel in Society (F.A.C.E.S). In each position, Azimi has shown an affinity for developing creative ideas with a lens, unique to her diverse linguistic background and acute curiosities.

Although she is currently hard-pressed to participate in industry events due to travel and work, Azimi has noted the importance of professional organizations such as CPRS and their role in connecting professionals with networking opportunities and resources. As a practitioner of public relations and digital marketing, Azimi continually strives to grow her connections and clientele by bringing the best out of brands and, more importantly, herself.
